FAS participation in the African peace movement

May 2000 Creation of the Mano River Women's Peace Network, (Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone)
  Prevented the outbreak of hostilities between the three countries by bringing their leaders back to the negotiating table.
In 2001, the UN Secretary General, Mr KofiAnnan, commended MARWOPNET’s positive contributions to peace building.
In 2003, the UN General Assembly awarded MARWOPNET the prestigious United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights.
July 2000  Assembly of the Organisation of African Union, Lomé, Togo
  Ministers expressed their support for mainstreaming gender, once the Organization of the African Union (OAU) was transformed into the African Union (AU).
Feb 2001 AU Ordinary Session, Tripoli, Libya
  The African Union declared its intention of addressing the concerns of women. 
March 2001 Extraordinary Assembly of Heads of States & Governments Sirte, Libya
  A delegation of women lobbied for a greater inclusion of women in the newly established African Union.
July 2001 Informal Meeting on Gender Issues in the African Union Lusaka, Zambia
  The statements made at the ‘World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance’ were adopted by the AU.
June 2002  Campaign for Gender Mainstreaming in the AU, Durban, South Africa
  The ‘Durban Declaration on Mainstreaming Gender and Women’s Effective Participation in the African Union’ was adopted by women’s groups.
The recommendations of the Declaration for a Gender parity policy was adopted by the African Union.
April 2003 Strategic Planning Women's Conference, Dakar, Senegal
  The Dakar strategy on gender mainstreaming in the African Union was adopted
July 2003 AU Women's Pre-Summit Forum, Maputo, Mozambique
  Implementation of gender parity policy: 5 elected Commissioners out of 10 were female
The ‘Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa’ was adopted by the African Union.
June 2004  AU Women's Pre-Summit Consultative Meeting, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
  Adoption of “Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA)”
The African Women Committee on Peace and Development (AWCPD) was integrated into African Union mechanisms.
May 2005  First African Gender Award & Forum, Dakar, Senegal
  Presidents Wade of the Senegal & Mbeki of South Africa were awarded the 2005 African Gender Award
June 2006 FAS Conference on Gender, Peace and Security: Capitalizing 10 years of Women’s Experience, Bamako, Mali
  A study called “The Women’s Peace Movement in Africa: A study on 10Years of practice towards peace and security-building” was presented.
The study was initiated and funded by FAS
June 2006 AU Pre-Summit Consultative Meeting, Banjul, Gambia
  Official launch of the ‘Gender is My Agenda Campaign’
January 2007 AU Pre-Summit Consultative Meeting, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
